Public pension systems are under increased stress in all developed countries. During the last four decades, life expectancy has increased. At the same time, labor force participation especially by older men has decreased significantly. There is empirical evidence linking retirement patterns closely to social security rules, suggesting that provisions favoring early retirement are to a large extent responsible for reduced labor market participation and financial distress facing social security systems in coming decades. However, hours worked is only part of the determinants of the effective labor supply. There has been much less analysis of the effects of social security rules on human capital formation.
The main focus of this project is to analyze the effects of social security rules on labor market participation, production, investment in human capital and welfare. In different papers related to project, we use theoretical, computational as well as econometric framework. We have developed a general equilibrium life-cycle model in which individuals divide in each year of their life their time between human capital formation, labor supply and leisure. We also analyze these questions econometrically, using Danish data. In two articles, we analyze the interaction between general income redistribution and human capital investment. In other separate papers, we analyze the political economics of public education and the dynamic cost of draft system. | |
